ENGL 1030 Skills for College English
    COMM 1008 College English
    COMM 1017 Professional Communications

The General English Assessment is a tool to measure your writing skills. The assessment results will direct you to the English course that is suitable for you. The assessment consists of two parts: an opinion essay (three to five paragraphs long) and a grammar/writing skills test (multiple choice). The essay may be handwritten or typed on the computer; the grammar/writing skills test must be done on the computer. The assessment will take at least two hours to complete. To prepare for the General English Assessment, visit the Assessment Centre web site.

  • You must have a General Math Assessment result (or an approved equivalent) before you register in the following courses:
    MATH 1074 Mathematics
    MATH 1103 Hospitality Mathematics

The General Math Assessment is a tool to measure your math skills. The assessment results will direct you to the math course that is most suitable for you. The assessment consists of a math test (multiple choice) done on the computer. To prepare for the General Math Assessment, visit the Assessment Centre web site.

  • You can book your General English Assessment or General Math Assessment through the automated telephone booking system at 416-415-2005 using your student ID number. If you have not received a student ID number, visit a Student Service Centre.

  • If you have a physical, emotional or learning disability, you may request special accommodation for your assessment. Call the Disability Services Office at 416-415-5000, ext. 2622, to make an appointment to have an accommodation profile created. Once you have an accommodation profile, you may book your assessment by calling 416-415-5000, ext. 2624. The College requires seven days' notice to arrange your accommodation.

  • Assessments are completed at one of the Assessment Centres. Casa Loma campus and St. James campus each have an Assessment Centre. The specific locations of these centres are provided for you when you call the automated telephone booking system. To complete your assessment, you must bring a current photo ID (e.g., driver’s licence), a pen, a pencil and the assessment fee ($35 for the General English Assessment and $30 for the General Math Assessment). Assessment fees are payable by cash, debit, money order, Visa or MasterCard. Personal cheques are not accepted.

  • You will get the results immediately. As soon as you complete the assessment, you will meet with the assessment advisor to discuss your English or math placement. The advisor will give you a letter indicating the English/communications or math course in which you are permitted to enrol. You must successfully complete that course before registering in the next level. (Please note that, in peak periods, personal interviews may not be possible; results would then be mailed.) Provide a copy of your assessment results when you register for your course and bring a copy to class on the first day.
